Reading Stock Quotes Correctly Before You Place Orders

    BSE Share Price

Every investor in India eventually learns that a stock quote is more than a single number flashing on a screen. It is a compressed message about demand, supply, sentiment and timing. Beginners often glance at the BSE Share Price of a favourite company and assume they know everything about its worth. Experienced participants understand that the figure is only the visible tip of a much larger structure. Before committing money, it helps to examine the NSE Share Price alongside volumes, bid and ask depth, and the day’s range. This article explains how to interpret a live quote with care, so that your orders are placed on the basis of understanding rather than excitement.

The Anatomy of a Live Quote

A typical quote shows the last traded price, the open, high, low and previous close. The last traded price is where the most recent trade happened. It does not always mean you can get in at that price as you are not there at the moment. Previous close is the basis of the percentage movement you see in green or red. The day’s high and low show how much the stock has moved which helps you gauge if you are near a peak or trough.

    Bid, Ask and Market Depth

Underlying the headline quote is the order book. The bid is the lowest price at which a buyer is ready to buy, while the ask is the lowest price at which a seller is ready to sell. The distance between the ask and bid is the spread. In a heavily traded large cap, the spread could be a single paise, but in thinly traded stocks it could be several rupees. Market depth shows you how many shares are waiting to be traded at particular prices. If there are many buy orders stacked at a particular price below the current quote, that provides a support level, while a cluster of sell orders at a higher price would provide resistance.

    Volume Confirms the Story

A movement in price without a concomitant increase in volume should always raise eyebrows. A stock which moves up two percent with very low volume is likely to have smaller orders getting filled, but when the same stock moves up two percent with a volume much higher than its average, it is a more credible move. See how much volume you have today versus the average of the last twenty days. Also look at the delivery percentage, which shows what proportion of the traded quantity has been actually delivered into demat accounts as against being squared off during the day. Stocks which have higher delivery percentages tend to be more sought after.

    Putting Quote Reading Into Practice

Make a small checklist for yourself before placing any order. Look at the day’s range, compare the volume with the average, check the spread and any recent news. Do not place market orders for illiquid stocks as you could get slipped in at a much worse price. Always use limit orders where you specify the maximum price you are willing to pay or the minimum you are willing to receive. Check out the long term chart as well before placing a trade as a quote on a standalone basis does not mean much. A stock which has more than doubled in six months will need a different kind of caution than one which has been hovering around a particular range for a long time.

Finally, remember that the number on your screen reflects the collective view of many participants at a particular moment. Your job is to decide if the number makes sense to you and if there is value in buying the stock at that price versus selling it. Investors who take the trouble to read the numbers patiently, understand liquidity and use limit orders tend to stay away from some of the classic pitfalls which reduce returns over a period of time.
